Emergency fund
Build a buffer for life’s unexpected turns.
Your emergency fund target
For illustration only. Read the assumptions below for the full picture.
Understand your result.
Build an emergency-fund target from essential monthly obligations and your chosen months of cover. Then compare the target with savings already available for emergencies.
The shortfall and time-to-target are planning aids. Income stability, dependants, insurance and access to cash can all affect the cover you choose.
A worked example.
Using this calculator’s default inputs, your emergency fund target is ₹2,40,000. This is an illustration of the stated formula, not a forecast.
See the example inputs
| Essential monthly expenses | ₹40,000 |
|---|---|
| Months of cover | 6 months |
| Emergency savings now | ₹1,00,000 |
| Monthly amount you can save | ₹10,000 |
A common mistake to avoid
Counting locked or volatile investments as immediately available emergency cash.
Questions you might have.
Is six months always enough?
No. The cover input is personal. A household with variable income or more dependants may choose a different runway.
Does the saving period include interest?
No. This simple target model excludes interest and inflation. Use How Long to Save for an interest-bearing scenario.

How we calculate it
Target = monthly essential expenses × months of cover. Months to target = remaining shortfall ÷ monthly saving, rounded up.
Assumptions & things to know
Include rent, EMIs, food, premiums and dependants. The chosen cover is personal, not a fixed recommendation. No interest or inflation included.
