How long to save
Find the time between today and your goal.
Estimated time to your goal
The target is first reached in month 72.
For illustration only. Read the assumptions below for the full picture.
Understand your result.
Estimate how many months it takes to reach a nominal savings target using an opening balance, regular deposits and an assumed interest rate.
The model stops at the first month the balance reaches the target. The final balance may be slightly higher because deposits occur in whole monthly steps.
A worked example.
Using this calculator’s default inputs, estimated time to your goal is 6 yr 0 mo. This is an illustration of the stated formula, not a forecast.

| Target savings amount | ₹10,00,000 |
|---|---|
| Savings already set aside | ₹1,00,000 |
| Monthly contribution | ₹10,000 |
| Assumed nominal annual interest | 6 % |
A common mistake to avoid
Entering a target in today’s rupees without considering whether its cost will rise.
Questions you might have.
Does the target rise with inflation?
No. Enter the future nominal target, or use Savings Goal to include a goal-cost inflation assumption.
What happens with no deposits and no interest?
A higher target is not reached within the model’s 100-year horizon. Existing savings can still mean the goal is already reached.

How we calculate it
Each month the opening balance earns annual interest ÷ 12, then the monthly deposit is added. Stop at the first month that reaches the target.
