How many months of salary does your phone cost?
Turn a phone’s price into months, days and hours of your work.
Divide the phone price by your monthly take-home pay. An ₹80,000 phone on a ₹60,000 monthly take-home costs 1.33 months of pay, about 29 working days or 260 hours at 45 hours a week. On a 12-month EMI at 0% it is ₹6,667 a month, about 11% of that take-home.
Months of take-home pay
About 260 hours of work at 45 hours a week.

Understand your result.
A phone price feels different when you measure it in your own working time. This tool divides the price by your monthly take-home pay and converts the result into working days and hours, with an optional EMI view.
Take-home pay is used because that is what you can spend; CTC includes money that never reaches your account. If you only know your CTC, the tool can estimate take-home under the FY 2026-27 new regime, but the CTC to take-home calculator gives a more complete figure.
A worked example.
Using this calculator’s default inputs, months of take-home pay is 1.33 months. This is an illustration of the stated formula, not a forecast.

A common mistake to avoid
Judging affordability by the EMI alone, when a no-cost EMI can still carry processing fees and the full price still has to be paid.
Questions you might have.
How many months of salary should a phone cost?
There is no official rule. Many people find it easier to keep a phone under one month of take-home pay, but your savings, needs and other goals matter more than any ratio.
Should I use CTC or take-home?
Take-home. CTC includes employer costs, PF and tax that never reach your account. If you only know your CTC, choose that option for a rough conversion or use the CTC to take-home calculator.
How much is an iPhone in hours of work?
Enter its price and your take-home. For example, an ₹80,000 phone on ₹60,000 a month at 45 hours a week is about 260 hours of work.
What counts as a working day here?
The tool assumes a five-day week and spreads your weekly hours evenly across the year, ignoring leave and holidays. It is a way to picture the cost, not a payroll calculation.
Is a no-cost EMI really free?
Often the interest is offset by a discount you would otherwise get, and a processing fee or GST may apply. Set the EMI rate to 0 for a true no-cost plan, or enter the actual rate.

How we calculate it
Months of pay = phone price ÷ monthly take-home. Hours = months × (hours a week × 52 ÷ 12). Days = hours ÷ (hours a week ÷ 5), assuming a five-day week. EMI = P × r × (1+r)^n ÷ ((1+r)^n − 1) with r = annual rate ÷ 12, or price ÷ months at 0%.
Assumptions & things to know
Uses take-home pay, not CTC, because that is what you can spend. The CTC option is a rough conversion; your payslip may differ. Hours are spread evenly across the year and ignore leave. The EMI view excludes processing fees, GST on interest and any discount for paying upfront.
